Can I see what I am writing on the form?
Yes. There is a ballpoint ink cartridge in the pen that works just like any ballpoint pen.

What if my handwriting is really bad, will the system be able to interpret what I write?
That depends on just how bad the handwriting is.   If you have trouble reading the handwriting, then you can bet that any handwriting interpretation algorithm will also be challanged.  But all misinterpretaions are easy to correct.  When you to go to the Form Viewer web site to verify the interpretation of what was written, you can easily make corrections to the interpretations. You will find that the recognition on check boxes, dates and numbers (diagnosis codes, for example) is just about perfect, but handwriting is always the issue.  That said, handwriting interpretation has a very high accuracy rate.

What if the Pen runs out of ink?
Put in a new ink cartridge. 5 refills come with each pen.

If the ink runs out and I keep writing with the Pen, is that work lost?
No. The pen records your pen strokes, not the visual ink copy you see.

Will the battery 'die' in the middle of the day like it does on my laptop?
Very unlikely. If you put the cap on when it is not in use, the battery will last for several days of heavy use before it will need to be recharged. However, when you dock the pen to upload data, the Docking Station recharges the battery. So, if you are uploading a days work at the end of each day, the battery should never run down. If you are using the Bluetooth enabled pen to transmit data to the Form Viewer throughout the day, you can still dock your pen at night to recharge the battery.

How often do I need new batteries?
The pen battery will last for the life of the pen, as long as the pen is subject to normal use and care.

What if I drop the pen?
No problem. Pick it up and continue. It is not fragile like a Laptop or PDA.

How secure is the data in the Pen?
Very secure. If your pen is lost or stolen, the data in the pen is safe unlike data in a Laptop or PDA. The data cannot be extracted without the docking station and then it goes straight to the web site in an encrypted format and the pen memory is emptied.

Can I erase a mistake and correct it when I am completing a form?
No. It is recommended that if you know you may have made a mistake or if you do not have the necessary information at hand, just circle the specific response field on the paper form and when you are on the Form viewer web site to verify the interpretation of what was written, you will see the circled item very clearly in the Ink Stroke mode. You can then easily correct any entry, add missing data or delete a response.

If I complete a form, can it be checked by someone in the office or do I have to check it?
Users can only view their own work. However, the Agency Administrator, and whoever else is given permission by the Administrator, can see and edit/verify all forms on the Form Viewer that have been uploaded by any staff member.   So an authorized person in the office could verify your data.

What happens if I lose my pen?
First, as mentioned above, the data is secure. No unauthorized person can get patient data from your pen. After that, you would have to report it to Digital Writing Systems so the pen can be deactivated and order a new one. If you took advantage of the lost pen insurance, it would be replaced for free.

Can I reuse Forms?
With one exception, the answer is 'No'. Once you use a form, that form cannot be used again for a different Patient, but you can add to it for the same patient. The exception is the Day Sheet-Summary form which can record five visits to five different patients. That form can be used until each visit section is completed.
